Dryer Vent Cleaning & Duct Upgrade in Redwood City

A stacked Electrolux dryer in Redwood City was found with severe lint buildup, prohibited foil flex duct, and clothing items lodged inside the exhaust system. The technician fully cleaned the system, removed the non-compliant duct, and installed hard pipe with a magnetic vent connector for safe, easy future access.

Completed July 14, 2026

Existing flexible foil dryer vent duct running vertically along an interior wall, wrapped in reflective insulation, with no visible mechanical supports or clamps securing it at required intervals

The original foil flex duct ran vertically without proper support and was packed with lint, water, and clothing items. It was replaced with rigid hard pipe and a mag vent connector.

## What We Found During this residential dryer exhaust cleaning and inspection in Redwood City, our technician discovered a serious combination of hazards inside a stacked Electrolux washer/dryer unit installed in a tight laundry closet. The existing transition duct was a flexible foil type, which is prohibited under IRC M1502.4.1. That standard requires smooth-interior metal duct of no less than 0.0157-inch (No. 28 gauge) thickness. Foil flex duct fails that threshold and its ribbed interior traps lint at 4 to 8 times the rate of smooth rigid duct. Beyond the code violation, the duct interior was heavily clogged with compacted gray and dark lint coating the walls and significantly narrowing the effective airflow diameter, consistent with a greater-than-50% occlusion. At that level of blockage, airflow at the termination typically falls below 200 CFM, well under the 300-plus CFM most manufacturers require, and exhaust back-pressure can push temperatures past 180 degrees F at the dryer connection. This is a leading cause of the approximately 2,900 residential dryer fires reported each year by the U.S. Fire Administration. ## Clothing Items Discovered Inside the Duct and Dryer A particularly notable finding on this job was the recovery of clothing items from two separate locations in the exhaust path. Three pairs of underwear and a sock were retrieved approximately 4 feet into the exhaust duct. Additional socks and underwear were found inside the burner tube of the dryer itself. This is a known vulnerability with certain Electrolux dryer models: the lint trap opening is large enough that small garments can pass through and migrate into the exhaust path or internal components. These obstructions compound lint blockage, restrict airflow further, and pose a direct ignition risk near the burner assembly. Full removal of all debris and foreign objects was completed before any duct work began. ## What We Did: Hard Pipe and Mag Vent Installation After clearing the system, the non-compliant foil flex duct was removed entirely. In its place, the technician installed approximately 4 feet of rigid hard pipe with a 22-degree elbow, keeping the equivalent duct length well within the IRC M1502.4.6.1 limit of 35 feet. At the dryer connection point, a magnetic vent (mag vent) connector was installed. This solution is purpose-built for stacked units in tight closets where pulling the appliance in and out for service is otherwise difficult. The magnetic coupling allows the duct to disconnect cleanly when the unit needs to be moved and reconnects securely when it is slid back into place. Airflow through the system was verified as strong after the installation, and the hard pipe interior provides a smooth, code-compliant surface that resists lint accumulation and will be straightforward to clean at future service intervals. ## Outcome and Serviceability The completed installation brings the exhaust system into compliance with IRC M1502.4.1 (duct material), M1502.2 (independent exhaust to outdoors), and M1502.4.6.1 (equivalent duct length). The Redwood City homeowner now has a dryer exhaust path that is clear of obstructions, constructed of approved rigid metal duct, and designed for easy future access. Routine annual cleaning is recommended, particularly given the Electrolux lint trap design noted on this job, to prevent recurrence of the debris accumulation found during this visit.
