Before and after: lint-clogged exterior vent opening replaced with a new flush mount dryer wall vent
What We Found
During a service call at a home in Los Altos Hills, our technician found the exterior dryer vent termination in poor condition. Heavy lint accumulation had packed into the wall opening around the metal transition duct, and the surrounding wood siding and trim had begun to deteriorate from prolonged moisture and lint exposure. No proper exterior hood or cap was present at the opening, leaving the duct terminal exposed to the elements and allowing lint to build up unchecked over time. This kind of unprotected termination is a known fire hazard, since compacted lint at the exhaust outlet restricts airflow and traps heat right at the point where the system is supposed to be venting safely to the outdoors.
What We Did
Our crew began by clearing out the compacted lint and debris from the wall opening and surrounding cavity so the new hardware could be properly seated against sound material. We then installed a new 4 inch flush mount dryer wall vent in white, a no-collar design with a heavy gauge Galvalume steel body and powder coated finish built to meet or exceed current venting code requirements. This vent includes a gravity-operated damper that opens when the dryer is running and seals closed when it is not, which keeps outside air, insects, and rodents from entering the duct between cycles. As part of the same visit, we addressed one linear foot of duct connecting to this termination, replacing the old flammable transition material with fire-rated DryerFlex duct and resealing the joint to eliminate the gap that had been allowing lint to escape into the wall cavity.
The Outcome
The finished installation sits flush against the siding with a clean seal around the mounting flange and no visible gaps where lint or moisture could re-enter the wall. The damper closes fully by gravity, confirming proper function, and the termination now provides an unobstructed passageway for exhaust air as required by code. With the new DryerFlex transition duct in place and the old lint-packed opening cleared and sealed, the system is positioned to exhaust efficiently again, which should translate into shorter drying cycles and reduced strain on the dryer itself. Homeowners in the area with older vent terminations exposed to weather should expect this type of flush mount vent to hold up well over time given its steel construction and powder coat finish.
Why This Matters
Dryer vent terminations are one of the most overlooked parts of a home's exhaust system, yet they play a critical role in both fire safety and dryer performance. An exterior opening without a proper backdraft damper or hood invites lint buildup, pest intrusion, and moisture damage to surrounding building materials, all of which were visible at this property before our visit. Replacing flammable or improvised duct sections with fire-rated DryerFlex material, as we did here, is a straightforward way to reduce the risk of overheating and duct failure inside the wall. For homeowners in Los Altos Hills with dryer vents that are more than a few years old or showing lint staining on exterior siding, a similar inspection and vent upgrade is a worthwhile preventive step.
